Valley of Dreams

The rock formations in the Valley of Dreams, including dramatic features like the "Alien Throne" (featured on this year’s shirt) are primarily the result of erosion. Formations are sculpted from layers of sedimentary rock that have been deposited over millions of years.

The Valley of Dreams is adjacent to the Bisti / De-Na-Zin Wilderness and Ah-She-Sle-Pah Wilderness areas in northwestern New Mexico. The landscape consists of eroded badlands, colorful hoodoos, and fossil-bearing formations dating to the Late Cretaceous. This 45,000-acre wilderness protects unique geological features and paleontological resources, including petrified wood and vertebrate fossils. Hiking here means exploring unmarked routes across clay hills and sandstone outcrops, offering visitors a rare opportunity to experience rugged terrain and the quiet beauty of the high desert. Translated from the Navajo language, Bisti (Bis-tie) means “a large area of shale hills.” De-Na-Zin (Deh-nah-zin) takes its name from the Navajo words for “cranes.”
