New Mexico Mountain Club History (1952-present)

The New Mexico Mountain Club (NMMC) is the state's oldest hiking and climbing organization, founded in January 1952 by a group of outdoor enthusiasts in Albuquerque. Their inaugural meeting took place on January 23, 1952, followed by the first club outing on February 3, 1952, to Ladrón Peak in the Sierra Ladrones, south of Albuquerque.

Since its inception, the NMMC has been dedicated to exploring the diverse landscapes of New Mexico and beyond. The club organizes a variety of activities, including hiking, rock climbing, backpacking, snowshoeing, and car camping, catering to both novices and experienced adventurers. These outings are led by volunteer Hike & Climb Section trip leaders who generously contribute their time and expertise.

Over the decades, the club has grown significantly, and currently boast almost 1,000 members.
