Pre-session Preparation

  • Study the Belay section of the Handbook and view the demonstration videos
  • Study the Rappel section in the Handbook and view the demonstration
  • Study the Ropes, Knots and Hitches section of the Handbook and textbook references and continue working to improve your competence
  • Study the Standard Climbing Signals section of the Handbook and continue practicing your climbing communication skills
  • Study how to tie and properly use the Munter Hitch

    Climber-Rating Qualification Form

    Have your instructor sign­off for your mandatory attendance and for the following skill
    demonstrations:

    • Skills Item 1: Ropes, Knots and Hitches­ 1st demonstration sign-­off
    • Skills Item 2: Rope coiling­ 1st demonstration sign-­off
    • Skills Item 3: Rope Throwing­ 1st demonstration sign­-off
    • Skills Item 4: Standard Climbing Signals­ 1st demonstration sign­-off
    • Skills Item 5.1: Belay Skills, Lower stance­ 1st demo sign­-off
    • Skills Item 5.2: Belay Skills, Upper stance­ 1st demo sign-­off
    • Skills Item 5.3: Belay Skills, Lead belay­ 1st demonstration sign­-off
    • Skills Item 5.4: Top rope Climbing­ 1st demonstration sign-­off
    • Skills Item 6.1: Low-­angle rappel­ 1st Demonstration sign-­off
    • Skills Item 6.2: High­-angle rappel­ 1st Demonstration sign-­off

    Students should be prepared to make about a 1.5 mile hike from the trailhead to the practice area, with some scrambling over slab.  Upon arriving at the location chosen by the Leader, 2 Assistants will review knots and skills with the Students, while 2 Assistants will help the Leader set up the station. Once the station is ready and skills have been thoroughly reviewed, the Students will rotate through the skills­ under the close supervision of the Leader and Assistants. This will be followed by the students rotating through the separate high­angle­ rappel and belay-­from­-above/climbing stations.

    What to Bring

    * All: Bring your personal climbing gear, helmet, climbing shoes, lunch, water, rain jacket, extra
    layer, headlamp, pack large enough to also carry communal gear
    * Students: Bring your Rating Form to all sessions; Be prepared to demonstrate knots and skills;

    Directions

    From the Smith's parking lot at Montgomery and Tramway, we'll break up into carpools and head to the Lower La Cueva Picnic Area.
